I suppose all us pre-orderees should spend our preview time getting as far away from Ascalon as possible...

But hey, we've all been at the newbie stage, and I bet we've all posted WTB/T/S a few times. I really do hope GW Staff do something about all the spamming...it's sad to know you almost have to spam to sell or trade your items. (I want that dang 'say' command!)

I've played online before with games like Nox (Westwoods atempt at Diablo 2) Starcraft, Diablo, etc...but Guild Wars is my first MMORPG...mainly because when I was talking with a friend who works for EB games about what I didn't like in games like Ever Quest, she told me about Guild Wars because it elimates the tediums of the traditional MMORPG (including the users), and it turned out to be everything I wanted in a game. Any experience I've had with other users has lead me to agree that the population of Tyria is more civilized, and this is a most wonderful thing. When I think of the perfect game, Guild Wars is it (and I did think about the perfect game before I knew of Guild Wars).

I guess I have people like members of sites like GWGuru to thank for that.

Mechwarrior (/sigh) was one of my favorite games... the original that is. It allowed completely open ended play until you died (in battle or old age!) I didn't even know there was a real plot involved until I decided to hop around to some of the planets I'd never visited. Mech4:Mercenaries tried to capture that game style, but was still too linear for complete freedom. Man, I just found my old Crescent Hawks Inception and Crescent Hawks Revenge floppies a few days ago, installed em and had a blast. I think I'll have fond memories of GuildWars, already getting some from these betas..the community definately seems mature, but we DO need to open up and communicate more in game. I'm 26 btw, and probably one of the most immature people here heh. I'm not 1337 or whatever though... wonder if this link can save our souls (or at least let me hide out with cool people).

Mechwarrior II was my love of loves. Shame it refuses to work whatsoever on Windows XP... Did give Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries a try, enjoyed it a great deal but it wasn't MII.

Never did play the first, I ought to.

I think the maturity level is the result of 2 main things. Firstly only people serious about the game and able to get a pre order are able to get into the BWE. also most of the immature people like that are the same people who want to be able to get to level 60 and own everyone they meet from their uber items and stuff without using any skill, once they get in they get to about the second mission in post searing and start saying "hey no fair im level 6 and hes level 3 and he kicked my ass, this game sux, bye lozers" (with worse spelling) so once you get to lions or even yaks, most of them will have given up and gone back to WoW to win by statistics.

Yeah that's probobly it. Without the almighty high levels they might have to actually think while they play the game.....

Just to start out I'm 17. I think as a large part if we all kind of hold to talking like normal people it will actually hold out for the most part rather than getting all the 1337 5p34k all over the place. I do admit that the WTS/B/T was a real bother in Ascalon and I do admit that I did do a little bit of it (I wanted to get my new armor by the end of beta...and I did ) Yeah, but I'm pleased with the maturity level. I found myself not talking sometimes because, often times, I forgot it was there. Anyway, I did try to do my part and take new people through the same parts over and over again (I had to kill oh so many Charr at the gate). It was a nice revenue for money too.
I'm loving the community thus far and I hope it keeps up, but I also believe that the whole thing about us willing to preoder adds to our level of civility. Let's hope it stays relitively high.
I would also like to add that maturity is a relative term. I love playing the game with a more serious look, but sometimes I feel like a good dance or running naked through the streets just to shake things up a bit just to see what comments I might get when I don't really feel like adventuring.

Ignorance can be rid of through learning, stupidity lasts forever.

Heh, I wrote all of this via the two finger typing meathod!

Now who's the noob? I don't know how to read this. I guess I want to know but, I really wish I didn't have to look at it. It just hurts my eyes.

As far as the maturity level aroud this place goes, I am surprised that there are so many people around here that are younger than twenty.

I must say that I am a little nervous about dealing with JoHnNy JaXAsX fuKKin wiHT me whenever the waves do come if they come at all.

The good thing with names is that GW doesn't allow numbers or symbols for name. The last time I checked, they also capitalize the first letter of each word. Of course, this doesn't change immaturity levels.. but at least on the surface, it makes me feel so much better.

True, but on the other hand, I feel prevented from using names like Dawngreeter or Ril'Anthon or stuff like that there. All a metter of personal preference, I suppose, and like the level cap if you fix this the old problems come back.

I'd have to agree with that GW isn't a game for idiot kids. They can't level to 1000 and then kill level 1s followed by insults just to ruin it for others. They'll be playing WoW or whatever, good riddance.

What if the only character they aloowed was ' and - ? That would be the only special sympols that would be needed for names whitout allowing tacky names.

Yes, I think that would be suitable. I don't think that anyone could go too crazy with that.

Try DosBox emulator http://dosbox.cjb.net/
Also, download a shell for it for easier use (say, this one http://members.home.nl/mabus/dfend.htm)

I'm not sure that it will help you with MW2, but it solves a lot of incompatibility problems with old games.

Oh my gosh that would be realyl funny and very interesting to see what was come up with. Also, liek Diablo II they only allow one - or _ not one of each or two of each. Just one or the other. That would be a good idea too. Only allowing one ' and one - (In this case one of each is fine.) A good thing about this with World Of WarCraft though, I read that they check all names. If it doesnt seem like an actual name, they make you change it.

I read an article on a fellow striving to make Mechwarrior II work. In the end, it succeeded, but I can't recall if it was using DosBox or not. However, I do remember it being suggested to me.

I'll see if I can't jumpstart the game with it. Thanks for the linkage.
